Sir George and Cllr Phil North took time off from the General Election campaign to visit Custom Interconnect Ltd, at CIL House, Charlton Road in Andover.
"This science based company moved to Andover from Whitchurch some ten years ago, and occupies the site that used to house James Meade, the mail order menswear shop. I was enormously impressed by the technology which they are developing, in competition with larger multinational companies. They are developing LED technology, which replaces hazardous materials in lamps, and uses much less energy. They are also doing some pioneering work in developing units which can be used for routine biological screening for infections such as Tuberculosis. The bulk of their products are sold worldwide, with the largest single market being Japan".
Sir George was enormously impressed with the progress the company was making in developing applications for its products, and was pleased to hear that orders were substantially up on last year.
"I am very anxious that Andover should attract more companies like CIL, to broaden the base of the local economy and get a stake in science and research".
