Sir George popped in to the Andover Bingo Club in Junction Road, and met Nigel Green, the general manager.
"The Mecca Bingo Club makes a valuable social contribution to the town, and the players that I met thoroughly enjoyed their evening out. It is a good value evening out, with the opportunity to win a useful sum of money. Nigel explained that the way bingo is taxed puts it at a disadvantage with other forms of gambling, although it is a highly regulated form of entertainment, that doesn't have the social problems of other types of gambling".
Sir George was given a copy of the Bingo Bond, and said he would consider whether he could sign up to it.
"I explained to Nigel that, just at the moment, the government's coffers were bare and that it might not be possible to make any specific commitments to lower the duty at this stage".
