Sir George returned to the seat he won for the Conservatives from Labour in 1974 to help his potential successor.
"Angie Bray will be a great MP for the seat I held before it was abolished in 1997. It has been restored by the Boundary Commission and I met many old friends while I was there with her. She was well supported by a very active association and I am keeping my fingers crossed for a repeat of february 1974, when i won the seat from Labour."
